what is color guard?

Color Guard is an artistic sport that combines dance and choreography with the spinning of flags, sabers, rifles, and other equipment. Their visually striking performances feature dynamic movements, tosses, and catches as they spin and manipulate their equipment with flair and athleticism. Though originally an auxiliary unit supporting military ceremonies, color guard has evolved into a competitive activity with its own competitions and complex routines demanding strength, coordination, and showmanship. Blending dance, gymnastics, and traditional military drill into an artistic display of coordination and finesse, color guard transforms equipment work into an elegant and entertaining spectacle.

The Fredericksburg Color Guard performs synchronized routines throughout the year. In the fall, this group is a strong visual element of the marching band show. Together, the FHS Color Guard performs at halftime, with poms in the stands at football games, and competes in UIL Marching Band Competitions with The Pride of the Texas Hill Country - The Fredericksburg High School Marching Band. In the winter, the Color Guard creates an independent show done indoors with pre-recorded music. This Winter Guard program provides performance opportunities for its members through competition in the Texas Color Guard Circuit in the greater Austin and San Antonio areas. During the spring, the Fredericksburg Color Guard puts on an annual Spring Show demonstrating the ensemble's skill and choreographing abilities.
